Defining my research proposal

Goals

In my dissertation I plan to explore the user interface of a car. With the outcome of knowledge and understanding of future design trends but also producing a 3D showcase of the UI that will be designed by the end of this dissertation inside a car. Furthermore, to this I will open the idea up to long term support of car UI’s in the idea that over the internet updates will keep the car feeling new. Where and how the screen/ screens will be placed in the car will also be a big goal in this as I will have to research in detail into this, as my design decisions should have justification.

 

Problem space

We are currently on the edge of all cars produced here on out will have a digital screen inside. For many years now the car has not undergone a lot of change. The problem being car UI have been slow to catch up to modern expectations. The is also a lot of bad examples out there on the market today with the user interface being slow and confusing to use for example. And what happens to that car 10 years down the line will the UI feel outdated? We already see examples now of cars produced 5 years ago now beginning to feel old and outdated.

 

Motivation

This dissertation is important to me as I have always loved cars in general since I was little and though out my journey of becoming a designer I always wanted to redesign a UI of a car as I personally have seen so many bad examples out there. It also gives me further motivation as one of my dream jobs would be working in the car UX sector with other interior designers.

 

Plan of action

I plan to achieve my goal of designing a good – based heavily on research – car user interface by experimenting and trying the design as I go along but as this is a heavy written module I believe the final outcome to be somewhat of an accident from the research and doing phases.

In terms of resources I am quite fortunate to have everything I need to hand. The only factor being the ongoing pandemic will force me to undergo all my research online and what I have to hand as personal research.
